Telluride Film Festival Poster

Telluride Film Festival Poster

Instructor: Jason Kernevich

Introduction:

I created a poster for the Telluride Film Festival. After researching past posters for the festival and seeing other film festival posters, I wanted to do something unique. I merged the natural beauty of Colorado with the magic of cinema.

Drawing from the states flower, I crafted a design around the delicate and enchanting Colorado Columbine Flower. In the poster the flower blooms with vibrancy and grace, its petals unfurling elegantly against a backdrop of a warm tan hue. I chose to do this subtle backdrop to accentuate the vivid colors of the flower and to provide a gentle contrast that directs the viewer’s attention to the focal point of the design. The focal point is a film reel which is in the center of the columbine flower, symbolizing the festival's celebration of cinematic artistry.

2001: A Space Odyssey Poster

2001: A Space Odyssey Poster

Instructor: Scott Laserow

Introduction:

This is a poster I created for Stanley Kubrik’s iconic film “2001: A Space Odyssey.” I chose to watch the film to gain inspiration that would inform my creative vision.  As I watched the film I was mesmerized by the stunning visuals and thought-provoking narrative. Drawing inspiration from the iconic scene depicting the evolution of mankind, where a mysterious monolith catalyzes the transformation of apes into tool-using beings, I found myself captivated by the symbolism of human evolution and technological progress.

After watching I found inspiration in the work of a renowned artist, drawing from Michelangelo's masterpiece, “The Creation of Adam” with its iconic depiction of God and Adam’s outstretched hands. With my interpretation on the right side of the monolith I illustrated a gorilla's hand emerging. This symbolizes the dawn of humanity’s existence and the raw instincts that once guided our species. On the left side I have a human hand in a space suit reaching from the depths of space. This represents the pinnace of human achievement and technological advancement. The two hands are touching fingers against the backdrop of space. At the center of the poster I put the monolith, a symbol of humanity’s encounter with the unknown and the transformative power of discovery. Through this illustration I sought to pay homage to Kubrick's influential work while offering my own unique interpretation of its enduring legacy.
